Although not an immediate complication, occasionally the flex sig cannot be completed. This is due to patient discomfort, usually from a very tortuous or twisted colon.

If this happens, your doctor may recommend additional studies such as colonoscopy or barium enema x-ray to further evaluate your colon.

It's important to remember that this procedure only examines about one-third of your colon. Along with testing the stool for blood, it's only a part of your screening program for detection of colon cancer.
