CEMM.org CEMM - Your Guide to Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy

Risks of the Procedure

BackNext

A perforation is a hole through the wall of the colon. Again, this may occur following any flexible sigmoidoscopy, but it is more likely after a biopsy or polyp removal.

Some perforations are obvious at the time of the sigmoidoscopy, but others may not be apparent until some time later. A bit of cramping is not unusual after your procedure and may be expected, but abdominal pain that persists or that is accompanied by fever can signal a perforation.

If this occurs, call your doctor or return to the hospital immediately. Some perforations may be successfully treated with antibiotics, but others may require surgery.
